NETeller case extended to April 16

16 March 2007

NETeller co-founders Stephen Lawrence and John LeFebvre and the U.S. Attorney's office have agreed to another extension in the NETeller case. The next hearing is scheduled for April 16, said Rebekah Carmichael, a spokesperson for the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney's office.
In order for an extension to occur, "all parties must agree to it," Carmichael added.
The former e-wallet of choice for many Internet gamblers has seen its U.S. accounts frozen since the arrest of its two co-founders in January. Lawrence and LeFebvre both face money laundering charges.

Send,
Other than more time to work out some deal, what motivation would the NT guys possibly have to agreeing to extend?

Totally hypothetical, but if the prosecutor is leaning towards dropping/reducing charges and their lawyers know this, they don't really want to piss them off...

The defendants could have not agreed, but then a prosecutor considering dropping might just say screw it and file the charges... IF the lawyer knows the prosecutor is waivoring, you let them have some time.

I can't think of any other reason....it's all about a deal which I suppose is GOOD news for us.....if they prosecute it would take forever to settle.

I agree. There's no motivation for Lawrence and Lefebvre not to extend. They're out on bail, an extension doesn't really interfere with their lives, and if their lawyer suggests the money laundering charges won't hold water then why rock the boat?

From the beginning this has really been an attack by DOJ on its own citizens, in terms of the effect of its actions.

Yes there is! If the US Government cannot prove the case why give them more time to collect evidence to prove it. On the other hand, maybe the Government has a slam dunk and they need time to work out a deal. All in all, There is a deal being worked out one way or another. And the deal is to collect as much finanacial info as possible on US Citizens. Pay You Taxes next year folks! The umbrella of Neteller no longer exists.

cant figure out what the best result can be.

.... funds deemed to used illegally wont be returned

..... even if case is dropped which compliance officer at any bank doing business in the USA is going to sign off on allowing neteller as a client

.... neteller says ok we want to pay us clients but we allowed us clients to withdraw and transfer money expecting our other money to be returned now its not - now we wont be settling with our customers because we would effectively be taking money from our non us client base to fund it

just didnt expect the dominoes to fall this way in the beginning

If the government can't prove its case then they can wait until hell freezes over trying to collect non-existent evidence. Remember the original press release cited money laudering charges.
